Where to start
Number place values are an important aspect of Mathematics. If your child/learner has not yet grasped the concept of place values, this can affect their learning in later years and particularly affect their understanding of decimals. It is important to break these values down slowly. Lower year levels can start with ones (1-9) and progress further as they begin to understand each value. It is important to have your learner recognise not just the number value but also the word format of the value as a lot of students begin to struggle with worded problems in later years.
Where learners struggle
Children in earlier years struggle with having to pronounce larger numbers with 3 or more digits. This becomes a problem with reading. Some learners may also struggle with equations that are written vertically as they haven’t understood how each number place value should be lined up when writing their sums.
Tricks to teach learners
Point out the following in your lessons:
- Always tell them to line numbers up to the right when writing vertical sums.
- To get them used to number place value, point to the number and then the place value it is under whilst they read it.
- Always have them read it out loud as this starts to register into their minds.
How to use our kits
Our kits are provided as PDF printable files. Each will have a year level guide as well as an activity guide. The year level guide provides an idea of what level of learning your learner should be comprehending while the activity guide provides a few interactive ideas on how to effectively teach them. You are of course, free to create your own activities along with our kits. You will need to print these kits out on your own and possibly laminate and use a whiteboard marker for some of them if you wish to re-use them a few times.
